  • Not a form of everyday contraception
  • Emergency contraception can prevent pregnancy afterunprotected sex.
  • Take up to five days after sexual contact, but more effective in the

first 3 days

  • Taken after unprotected intercourse
  • Better to not use as a regular form of birth control because there are many side effects.
  • Taking it frequently can lead to many side effects

Advantages:

  • Avoid abortion or pregnancy
  • Can be purchased ahead of time
  • Available at most pharmacies and health centres

Disadvantages:

  • Some side effects including nausea and cramps
  • Less effective than regular methods of contraception
