- A mutually monogamous relationship with an uninfected partner is safe. This means that both of you have no other sexual partners and that you are sure your partners did not attract a sexually transmitted disease in a previous relationship but becoming pregnant is still a possibility.
- Intimate personal relationships free from coercion, violence. This means your relationship is respectful and that you have good communication with your partner about what you want and (what) you don’t want in terms of sex.
What are safer sex behaviors?
- Not having sex (the only 100% safe way to prevent HIV and pregnancy)
- To have only one partner, and to test you and your partner regularly for sexually transmitted diseases.
- Contraceptives can prevent pregnancy, but there is also the risk of attracting a sexually transmitted disease. To be safer, condoms should be used in addition to another contraceptive to prevent both sexually transmitted diseases and unintended pregnancy.
- Consistent use of condoms.
When you have sex, always use a condom, to prevent sexually transmitted diseases. To be very safe in preventing pregnancy it is recommended you also use another contraceptive method together with condom
When you have sex with anal penetration, always use a condom and use additional lubricants to prevent tearing of the condom and bleeding.
There is less chance of getting an STI through oral sex. However to be very safe it is good to use a condom.
The benefits of safe sex are:
- Protect yourself
- Protect your partners
- Peace of mind
