Q:What are the safe and effective commodities for birth spacing? Which is the best method? 

A:There are 4 methods, (i) condoms, (ii)daily pills, (iii) 12 weekly injection, and (iv) IUD. To select a method, couples should consult with skillful doctor and they themselves decide on the most appropriate and suitable method for them. Then they need to use the method correctly and systematically.

 

Q:Which birth spacing methods are harmful?

 A:The methods endorsed by the Ministry of Health are safer and more reliable. Natural methods are not reliable.

 

Q:Why women gain weight when they use birth spacing methods? How can we prevent from gaining weight? 

A:Maybe due to the effect of hormones content of contraceptive drugs. Whatever methods are used, there is less harm only if used after proper consultation with health professionals. Not to gain weight, one can take care of diet and life style. She should restrict oily and salty food and should take exercise.

 

Q:Is it possible to get pregnant while using a birth spacing method? How safe is a method? 

A:If they use expired or low quality drugs, or not using systematically (not taking every day), they may get pregnant. Birth spacing methods are not 100% effective. If they use quality drugs systematically, they are 95% to 99% effective.

 

Q:What are the side effects of birth spacing methods when used for a long time? 

A:Obesity, irregular menstruation, scanty or heavy menstruation, ischemic heart diseases are the possible side effects. Women with hypertension, heart or liver disease, and those who are smoking should not take contraceptives. Lactating mothers should not take contraceptive pills containing 2 hormones because it can cause reduce breast milk. Since contraceptives contain hormones, one should take contraceptive only after consultation and guidance from skilled person (health staff).

 

Q:What will happen if women take birth spacing drug after getting pregnant? 

A:It cannot abort an existing pregnancy. But before taking contraceptive, women should make sure that they are not pregnant.

 

Q:Why women get pregnant while they are taking 3 monthly injections? What can we do if any harmful effect occurs? 

A:If they use expired or low quality drugs, or not using systematically (not on right time), they may get pregnant. It will not affect the fetus.

 

Q:How much hormone contains in emergency contraceptives? 

A:It depends on the type of medicines. The pill containing two has the hormone quantity which is three to four times higher than that of one daily contraceptive pill. The pill containing only one hormone has hormones which are 30-40 times higher.

 

Q:Can we buy emergency contraceptives easily? Is it cheap? Can anybody buy it?

A:Anybody can buy emergency contraceptives easily. But only those who understand about the medicine are allowed to sell it. 

 

Q:We heard that emergency contraceptives will no longer effective if a woman uses it frequently. Is that true? 

A:Since Ecee2 (emergency contraceptivepills) are produced for emergency use only, it should not be used frequently. It can be harmful if they use it more frequently than recommended since it contains hormones.

 

Q:Is it safe and effective to use IUD? 

A:If IUD is inserted by a skilled health person, it is effective to prevent from pregnant for a long term. But, a woman needs to check whether the IUD is in right place by herself every time the period ends or frequently with a skilled health person.

 

Q:Is it possible to have normal sexual relationship after sterilization? Is it possible to get pregnant after sterilization?

 A:After getting male sterilization, sperm test should be done to make sure that there are no spermatozoa in the semen. After female sterilization, they can have sex as usual and cannot get pregnant. But in very rare cases, the tubes can connect again and can have baby.  Sterilization does not prevent sexually transmitted diseases.

 

Q:Is it possible to get pregnant, if a man stop sex before ejaculation and ejaculate outside?

A:There is possibility of getting pregnant if pulling out is not in time before ejaculation. because the clear fluid produced before ejaculation also contains some spermatozoa.

 

Q:While the effect of scientific methods and traditional methods are different, how can we explain to those who are still using traditional methods (e.g. taking pills vs using burnt stone)

A:You can explain that traditional methods are not evidence based and without proper testing/research, we do not know the benefits or adverse effects. Scientific methods have been tested and accepted all over the world. Therefore, one should switch from traditional method to scientific methods. And your explanation should use the real life examples of pros and cons from their surroundings. (There may be many other methods for discussion). It may take a long time to discuss.

 

Q:If men can receive male sterilization, which method is better, male and female sterilization? What are the side effects (consequences) of male sterilization?

A:Couple should consult with the doctor to get a good decision. There is no adverse effect, if sterilization is done by skilled doctor. In Myanmar, male sterilization is not legal.

 

Q:If there is reduction of breast milk production after taking daily contraceptive pills, should they stop taking pills? What should they do?

A:They can switch from pills to 3 months injection.

 

Q:Why fetusesdifferentiate as a boy or a girl? 

A:It depends on the type of spermatozoa of father which fertilized the ovum of mother.

 

Q:After female sterilization, how menstruation occurs?

A:Sterilization is done by ligation and cutting (excision) of the fallopian tubes (where ovum moves from ovary to uterus) only. And therefore, ovum cannot arrive into the uterus. Also, sperm cannot reach to the ovum. The ovaries and uterus are stay intact and normal. Hence, ovulation and hormone production from the ovaries continue. Uterus continues to prepare for receiving fertilized ovum, and when no ovum comes, menstruation occurs.

 

Q:Some women, who took daily contraceptive pills, suffer from dryness of skin and acnes, but some other women who also took daily contraceptive pills encounter better and smooth skin changes. Why?

A:It depends on the response of your body to the two hormones containing in the pills. 

 

Q:We want to know the details about why women who are taking drugs to tuberculosis should not use daily contraceptive pills?

A:Anti-tuberculosis drugs can reduce the hormone level. Therefore, if a woman takes those two drugs simultaneously, contraceptive effect is not reliable.
